Lois Beverly Niebuhr

Cross Plains–Lois Beverly (Obright) Niebuhr, age 81, went home to be with her Lord on Sunday, Nov. 13, 2011, surrounded at home by her loving family members. She was born Feb. 3, 1930, in Black Earth the daughter of Alfred and Verna (Schultz) Obright. She was baptized and confirmed at Black Earth Lutheran (Our Savior’s) Church in Black Earth. She graduated from Black Earth High School in 1947, and attended Sauk County Normal School in Reedsburg, Wis., where she earned her teaching certificate in 1949 and later taught at the Halfway Prairie School, one of Wisconsin’s last one-room school houses in the Town of Black Earth. Later in life Lois graduated from Edgewood College in Madison, Wis., where she received her Bachelor of Arts. Lois was active in St. Martin’s Lutheran Church in Cross Plains and for many years ran the Golden Agers organization. In recognition of her involvement in many volunteer organizations, Lois received the Community Service Award in 1979 from the Cross Plains Jaycees. Lois married Herbert Niebuhr on Nov. 25, 1949. Their first home was in Evansville, Wis., and in 1952 they became residents of Cross Plains. Lois was an avid artist, singer and published poet, who loved to paint scenes of the Cross Plains and Black Earth countryside. Lois is survived by her husband of 62 years, Herbert, her brothers Howard (Joyce) Obright, Duane (Donna) Obright and her sister Eileen (John) Bonine. Her six loving children survive her: Douglas (Jeanne) of Morton Grove, Ill., Julia (Michael) Tretheway of Richmond British Columbia and Cross Plains, Linda of Cross Plains, Bradley (Debby) of Cross Plains, Mark (Darla) of Town of Dekorra, Wis., and Gary of Cross Plains. Lois had 18 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her sister, Noreen (Leonard) Benson and her parents. Funeral services will be held at ST. MARTIN’S LUTHERAN CHURCH, 2427 Church Street, Cross Plains, Wis., at 11:00 A.M. on Friday, Nov. 18, 2011, the Rev. Curt Everson and Rev. Richard Lund, co-officiating. Burial will be in Valley Home Cemetery immediately following the service. A visitation will be held at St. Martin’s Lutheran Church on Thurs., Nov. 17, 2011, from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. and from 10:00 a.m. until time of service on Friday. Memorials may be sent to St. Martin’s Lutheran Church in Cross Plains. Cemetery: Burial will be in Valley Home Cemetery immediately following the service.
