Obituary
PHOTO NOLL EVA JOYCE WAUNAKEE-Eva Joyce Noll, age 89, passed away unexpectedly on Sunday (November 13) at St. Mary’s Hospital, Madison, WI. She was born on June 23, 1922, the daughter of Arthur and Hester (Tuttle) Tappen. She grew up in Madison near Vilas Park, and spoke often of jaunts there with her siblings. She graduated from Madison West High School in 1940. Joyce studied with Olive Endres and taught piano at the Wisconsin School of Music, leading up to and after receiving her teaching degree in 1945. She was the organist at St. Paul’s Chapel at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where she met her husband, David John Noll, while he was studying medicine. They were married at St. Paul’s on August 24, 1946. Joyce always loved nature and in particular was fond of local birds, the most musical of the animal world. Music is in fact the first word that comes to mind when thinking of Joyce. She spent every spare minute practicing, directing local choirs, and teaching and sharing her passion for music to all of her children. This was no small task considering her large family, and her commitments to gardening—growing, canning and freezing a large percentage of the family’s vegetables. She was active in the local 4H club, leading the Gordon-Go-Getters chorus, and taught and coached many community members in shows like the Verona Varieties. An active member of the Baroque Chorus of Madison, she also was the church choir director and organist at St. Andrew’s church in Verona. She accompanied not only her own children on their vocal and instrumental solos, and various ensembles, but also extended her talents to those in need of her services. She is survived by her children, Tracy (Vicki) Noll, Plano, Texas, Tim (Janice) Noll, Cross Plains, Wis., Christine (Paul) Seitz, Columbia, Mo., David ‘Tony’ (Cheryll) Noll, Mazomanie, Wis., Peter Noll, Mt. Horeb, Wis., Sarah (Russell Landers) Noll, Oakland, Calif., Amy Noll (Khalid Mouaouya), Huntington Station, N.Y., Monica Skarha, Waunakee, Wis., Marcy (Art) Tessmann, Watertown, Wis., Jessica (Michael) McKinney, Mahtomedi, Minn.; much loved grandchildren, Erika Noll, Kourtni Noll, Holly (Jim) Vondra, Matthew (Brenda) Noll, Tim (Kristen) Noll, Nicholas Noll (Kelly Smith), Emilee (Brian) Colalucci, Brad (Lindsay) Noll, Megan (Tom) Abell, Erin Landers, Justin Skarha, Madeleine Calhoon, Abigail Tessmann, Erica Tessmann and nine great grandchildren, Brenna, Kyle, Morgan, Tyler, Casey, Brady, Louis, Graham and Alex. She is also survived by her sisters, Mary Lippolt and Eleanor Beardsley and a son-in-law, David Calhoon. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Dr. David J. Noll and her daughter Dr. Laurie Noll. She was also preceded in death by her parents and brothers Arthur, John and Thomas Tappen. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at ST. BERNARD’S CATHOLIC CHURCH, 7450 University, Middleton, at 10:00 A.M. on Friday, Nov. 18, 2011 with Monsignor Douglas Dushack presiding. Burial will follow in St. Bernard’s Catholic Cemetery. A visitation will be held at GUNDERSON WEST FUNERAL HOME, 7435 University Ave., Middleton on Thursday, Nov. 17, 2011 from 5:00 until 8:00 p.m. and also on Friday from 9:30 a.m. until time of service at the church. Memorial donations to the National MS Society Wisconsin Chapter or the Wisconsin Youth Symphony Orchestra would be appreciated.
