David Doyle Gates

MADISON- David D. Gates, age 89, of Madison, passed away on Wednesday, Oct. 5, 2011, at HospiceCare. He was born on Sept. 2, 1922, in Fridley, Minn., the son of Robert and Mary Gates. David married Mary Margaret Saddy, on March 3, 1947, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Madison. He was a World War II veteran, serving in the U. S. Coast Guard on the Hyacinth. David retired from the State of Wisconsin, Department of Transportation, Division of Highways, where he worked in Madison and Waukesha. He was a member of St. Dennis Catholic Church. David was an avid golfer (three holes-in-one), cyclist and triathlete. He is survived by his wife, Mary; five children, David E. (Barbara) Gates of Dousman, Mary (Gary Hermansen) Gates of Los Altos, Calif., John (Michelle) Gates of Middleton, Zann (Jeff Roush) Gates of Davis, Calif., and Paul (Mary Ableman) Gates of Fall River; three grandchildren, Michael (Susan) Gates of Eagle, Matthew (Heather) Gates of Watertown, and Leigh Hermansen of Milwaukee; three great-grandchildren, Benjamin, Steven and Jacob Gates; and sister, Harriet Stern of Houston, Texas. David was preceded in death by his parents; brother, John Gates; and sisters, Ruth Wahlgren, Edith McDermontt and Esther Holt. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at ST. DENNIS CATHOLIC CHURCH, 505 Dempsey Road, Madison, at 11 a.m., on Monday, Oct. 10, 2011. Private burial will be held at Resurrection Cemetery. Visitation will be held at the church from 9 a.m. until the time of service on Monday.
