Obituary

FITCHBURG- George Gabrielse, age 83, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family on Monday, Sept. 26, 2011. He was born on July 16, 1928, in Sheboygan, the son of Jacob and Dina (Van de Guchte) Gabrielse. George was an example of God’s grace working daily in his life. A recovering alcoholic for 29 years, he was interested in giving, loving and sharing his faith in Jesus Christ. George started his career in construction in 1945 forming Gabe’s Construction with his father Jacob, and brothers. In 1949, he was united in marriage to Dorothy Katte. George continued with Gabe’s Construction until 1984 when he decided that it was time to move to Madison, starting InterCon Construction with his sons and son-in-law. He was courageous and ingenious in business always willing to reach out to every employee and let them know that they were valued. He served his customers with creativity and integrity. George was a founding director and originator of Oak Bank and was thrilled to be a part of establishing a community bank in Fitchburg that was aligned with his values. George was a craftsman and had a special love for cabinet making. He made countless heirlooms for his loved ones. George’s passion for wood and the opportunity for care, creation and learning caused him to give his wood shop to Rawhide Boys School to help in creating new opportunities for troubled youth. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Dorothy Gabrielse; five children, Tom (Diane) Gabrielse, Kaye (Mark) Oostdyk, Jack (Denise) Gabrielse, Bruce (Barbara) Gabrielse and Brian (Jennifer) Gabrielse; 16 grandchildren and 12 additional grandchildren by marriage; 18 great-grandchildren; brother, John (Ella) Gabrielse; sisters, Evangeline (Le Roy Ten Haken and the Rev. H. Fikkert, both deceased) Fikkert and Edith (Preston) DeHamer; and sister-in-law, Joyce (Ralph, deceased) Opgenorth. On behalf of the entire HammerHead family, I want to pass along our thoughts and prayers today. I've heard wonderful stories of the life George lived and of the leadership and ministry of his faith in Jesus Christ. May God bless the Gabrielse family and give you strength in His promise.

Dear Dorothy, You and your family are in our prayers as you have witnessed the passing of such a special man. It's been a privilege to know both you and George for more than 7 years and to have had numerous opportunities to minister through visits over these years. As difficult as it is to say "goodbye" we are comforted by the great news that some day you be reunited with George because of the finished work of Christ. Warmly in Christ, Glynn and Lorraine Laing

Dear Dorothy, I would like to express my deepest sympathy to the entire family. While I have not had the pleasure of personally meeting your husband, I am truly sorry for your loss. I'm sure you will cherish the memories. In times like these, I turn to God's Word the Bible for comfort, and I would like to share with you a wonderful promise God has made to us in John 5:28,29 which says in part, "Do not marvel at this, because the hour is coming in which all those in the memorial tombs will hear his voice and come out." Also, Revelation 21:3,4 gives us this assurance, "And he will wipe out every tear from their eyes, and death will be no more." May you all find much comfort in these future promises. My thoughts and prayers will be with you in this most difficult time.

We greatly appreciated George's thoughtfulness, kindness and generosity to our family. His example of godliness and community leadership inspired us. George thought BIG and encouraged us to do the same. We will always remember the twinkle in his eye and playful grin as he shared stories of his own life but also the happenings of grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He loved BIG too. He truly modeled Jesus' command to love your neighbor as yourself. How fortunate we were to be his neighbor. Much Love to Dorothy and all the family, Stuart and Mary Banks

To the entire Gabrielse family: Please know that our thoughts and prayers are with you all during this difficult time. Our entire family thought the world of George. He was a man of character. A man who lived his faith. The times we saw him, he always greeted us with a smile and made us feel welcome. Heaven is a better place today. God Bless you all. Love, The McCormicks.
