Robert James Smith

MADISON- Robert J. Smith, age 61, of Madison, passed away on Monday, Sept. 12, 2011. He was born on April 21, 1950, in Sparta, the son of Henry and Marie Smith. Robert graduated from New Glarus High School with the class of 1968. He worked for the Department of Motor Vehicles for more than 30 years. Robert served as the vice president of Union Local 68. He was an avid sports fan and a history buff, especially military history. Robert enjoyed playing card games, like euchre, pinochle and cribbage, and helping others. He is survived by son, Paul Smith (fianceé, Kayla Wagand) and Kayla’s son, Braedon Howard; brothers, Richard (Jodi) Smith, Lester (Peggy) Smith, Gary Smith and Bruce Smith; sisters, Kathleen Klein and Maxine Johnson; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Robert was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Charles Smith; sisters, Mary Smith and Patricia Tucker; and brother-in-law, Douglas Tucker. Family and friends are invited to celebrate Robert’s life at the VFW Post No. 7531, 301 Cottage Grove Road, Madison, on Thursday, Sept. 29, 2011, from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. Inurnment will take place at St. Patrick Cemetery in Sparta at a later date.
