Obituary

Marvel “Marv” Anderson, age 93, of Madison died on Friday, Aug. 26, 2011, at Oregon Manor, Oregon, WI, following a lengthy illness. Marvel was born on April 4, 1918, in Dodgeville Township to Charlie and Maggie (Gulson) Anderson. He was educated in the Dodgeville schools, Platteville Normal School and at UW Extension. With one year of aeronautics and meteorology, he became a licensed pilot. Marvel married Jane Working on Oct. 7, 1950, at the Lutheran Church in Dodgeville. Marv and Jane worked and made their home in Madison. He took great pride in the fact that he built their family home where they raised their four children. Marv worked as an Operating Engineer for several contractors in the Madison area and was part of the team that built the East Towne and West Towne Malls and the Rural Insurance building. He received a commendation citing the number of years with the Operating Engineers Local 139. After retiring from the Engineers, he worked as a maintenance engineer for the Verona schools until retiring in 1985. He was always busy taking care of his lawn, which was his pride and joy, helping his neighbors and taking small engine repair and wood carving classes. Marv was a 56-year member of the Church at Christ Memorial where he served as an elder and an usher. He was active in his church building committees and helped to bring stone from Rock Springs for the first church building on Axel Ave. He was also on the relocation committee for the new church building in Fitchburg. Marv is survived by his wife, Jane; sons, Greg (Kathryn Lyster) of Monona, Dan (Sue) of Petoskey, MI, and Jim (Kathy) Anderson and daughter Cheri (Bill) Swenson of Madison. Marv and Jane have eight grandchildren and one great-granddaughter. He is also survived by his sister, Naoma Potterton, sister-in-law, Jerry Anderson, and brother, Gene (Carole) Anderson and many nieces and nephews. Marv was preceded in death by his parents and 3 infant siblings; brothers, Colbert, Milo, DuWayne and Vernus (Skip); and sisters, Ollie, Elnora, Gretchen and Anzonette (Nettie). A memorial service will be held at the CHURCH AT CHRIST MEMORIAL, 2833 Raritan Road, Fitchburg, at 11AM on Tuesday September 6th. Visitation will be 1 hour prior to the service. Jane and her family would like to thank the staff members at Oak Park Place in Middleton, Oregon Manor in Oregon and HospiceCare in Madison. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to HospiceCare of Madison. Visitation will be 1 hour prior to the service. A memorial services will be held at the CHURCH AT CHRIST MEMORIAL, 2833 Raritan Road, Fitchburg, at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, September 6, 2011.
