CROSS PLAINS-John Henry Acker born March 8, 1940, passed away at his home in Cross Plains, WI on July 26, 2011. John was born to John and Rose (Wagner) Acker in the town of Berry, Wisconsin. John was known to many as Hannes (pronounced HAH-nes). With his long, soft (cuddly) beard, big blue eyes, and a charming personality, people just wanted to be around him. He often made jokes and told great stories. His laugh was infectious and he was rarely seen without a smile on his face. John was a wonderful son, husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother, and friend. John was 1 of 11 children born to the Acker family. He enjoyed the game of Euchre and played often with this wife as his partner. John also enjoyed gardening, woodworking, bird watching, and hunting. On weekly grocery store trips, he loved to talk with people and find special foods to create and share delicious soups he prepared. John is survived by his wife Diane of 52 years and his children: Bonnie (Kevin) Buck of Arena, Joan (Dave) Hyatt of Waunakee, Nancy (Terry) Yaeger of Waunakee, John (Tracy) Acker of Lone Rock, Joe (Rachel) Acker of Cross Plains; Grandchildren-Kevin Buck, David (Katherine) Hyatt, Heather Engelberger, Amber Yaeger, Johnny Acker, Melissa Acker, Amanda Acker, Monica Acker; Great Grandchildren- David Hyatt , Allison Anderson-Acker; and Godmother Aunt Mary (Frank) Schwartz. John is also survived by his siblings: Margaret Lamberty of Verona, Sister Haroldine Acker and Sister Elmerine Acker of Milwaukee, Sister John Rose Acker of Cross Plains, Milly (Bob Blum) Kelter of Black Earth, Harry (Elaine) Acker of Cross Plains, Susan Acker of Cross Plains, Leonard (Nancy) Acker of Cross Plains; and his in-laws Delores Acker, Susan Acker, Larry (Toots) Kessenich, Evie Bong, Joe Ziegler and Rob Schulenberg. John is preceded in death by his parents John and Rose Acker; son John H Acker; granddaughter Ashley D Hyatt; brothers Leander, Edward, and Elmer Acker; and In laws- Laverne Lamberty, Donald Tubby Kelter, Ruth Ziegler, and Marie Schulenberg; and faithful dog Yukon. John is further survived by many nieces, nephews, family and friends. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at ST. FRANCIS XAVIER CATHOLIC CHURCH, 2947 Thinnes St., Cross Plains at 11:00 AM on Friday, July 29, 2011 with Father Thomas Kelley presiding. Burial will be in St. Francis Xavier Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be at the church on Thursday, July 28, 2011 from 4:00 PM until 7:00 PM and also on Friday from 9:30 AM until the time of the service.
