Obituary

MIDDLETON-Gracely (Lee) Warren Hartwig, age 89, passed away in his home Friday, July 22, 2011. Lee was born March 5,1922, in Marshall, to Albert and Grace (Schimelpfenig) Hartwig. He graduated from Middleton High School in 1939. On September 1, 1942, Lee wed Helen Durkopp of Middleton. He enlisted in the United States Air Force in October 1942 and received his wings in 1944. He was very proud to have flown 36 missions over Europe as the pilot of a B-24 Liberator. Following his service, Lee owned and operated Hartwig’s Shade Shop for 52 years in Madison. In his retirement he pursued his passion for hunting and fishing and enjoyed life. Lee is survived by his wife Helen, daughter Terri Hyne, son Jon (Terri) Hartwig; grandchildren David (Mary), Jenni (friend Terry), Leah (Scott), and Carla; great-grandchildren, Alex, Katie, Elizabeth, and Blythe; sisters-in-law Mae Hartwig and Irene Hartwig, brother-in-law, Jim Durkopp and many nieces and nephews. The family will be holding a private service. We would like to express our deep gratitude for the wonderful care given to Lee by his Hospice caregivers.
