Obituary

MADISON/EAU CLAIRE-Marion J. (Verven) Jacobson, age 92,passed away on Monday, July 4, 2011. She was the 1st child born to George and Magda (Olson) Verven on April 5, 1919, in Eau Claire. Marion had one brother, George Owen "Sonny" Verven, born in 1922. She excelled as a student and graduated as a top student in her high school class, starting work before she graduated at 1st Federal Savings & Loan in Eau Claire. She married Sylvester O. "Jake" Jacobson on August 17, 1940, and followed him to Quantico, VA. when he was drafted into the Navy during WWII. They returned to Eau Claire, where Jack worked at Buri's Bakery on a bread route and Marion settled into her life as a homemaker. Their first child, a son, Stephen Terry, was born in Februay,1946 and a daughter, Julie, followed in July, 1952. Jake worked for Holsum Bakery (formerly Buri's) for many years until he and Marion moved to Madison when he was transferred to become General Manager of Gardner Bakery Co. in 1978. Marion was a strong, energetic and independent woman with a good sense of humor. She was an active volunteer throughout her life at Trinity Lutheran in Eau Claire, and Bethel Lutheran in Madison, where she served community meals and helped in the gift shop. She was also a Brownie leader, Sunday school teacher, census worker, helper at Red Cross blood banks, and an active member of the Dane County Republican party. She spent many years working as an election volunteer until she reached her mid-80's. Marion and Jake were members of Cherokee Country Club and enjoyed traveling during their 65 years of marriage, and also spent 18 winters in Phoenix, golfing and making new friends with other Wisconsin "snowbirds". She also liked to entertain and took great pride in taking care of her home and family. Marion was especially proud of her only grandson, Cole Klingbeil, born n July of 1996, and loved to attend his school programs, band concerts and ski meets. Marion is survived by her son Terry (Teri Venker) of Madison, daughter, Julie (Dan Klingbeil) and grandson, Cole Klingbeil, of Mt. Horeb, sister-in-law, Alyce Bailey,. of Eau Claire, brother-in-law and sister-law, Bill and Maryellen Jacobson, of Eau Claire and sister-in-law, Virginia Jacobson, of Eau Claire. She was preceded in death by her husband of 65 years, S.O. "Jake" Jacobson in October, 2005, brother, George Owen "Sonny" Verven in 2004, brothers-in-law, Dick and Vern and her parents. A Memorial service will be held at GUNDERSON WEST FUNERAL & CREMATION CARE, 7435 University Ave., Middleton at 2:00 PM on Saturday, July 9, 2011. Visitation will be on Saturday from 1:00 PM until the time of the service at the funeral home.
