Obituary

MADISON-Lloyd W. Briggs, age 92, passed away on Thursday, June 23, 2011, at HospiceCare. He hoped to get back to the life he loved, but the Lord called him home. Lloyd was the second son born to Harry and Mabel Briggs on April 13, 1919. He graduated from Madison East High School. Lloyd worked at the Park Hotel as a busboy until they told him he was too young. He then applied at Gisholt Machine Company as an apprentice and he worked there for several years, until a good friend told him that the fire department offered an opening, which he took. Later he obtained an associate degree from MATC in Fire Science Technology. Lloyd loved the job as a fireman and rose from a private on the department to the job of East Side District Chief where he remained until his retirement in 1979. He had plans of spending the winter months in the warm climate and did so, until a serious disease hit him in 1985. Shortly after undergoing a quadruple by-pass surgery he got a disease which is very hard to get, and harder yet to get rid of, Guillain-Barre Syndrome. Lloyd is survived by his beloved wife of 72 years, Erma; daughters, Sandra Scherer and Linda Miller; son, Lloyd Jr; daughter-in-law, Sonja Briggs; 12 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and sister-in-law, Pat Stevens of Florida. He was preceded in death by his parents; his beloved son, Mark; two brothers, Harry and William and their spouses; and daughter-in-law, Laveda Briggs. Funeral services will be held at GUNDERSON EAST FUNERAL HOME, 5203 Monona Dr., Madison, at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, June 28, 2011. Burial will follow at Roselawn Memorial Park. Visitation will be at the funeral home on Monday, June 27, 2011, from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. Cemetery: Burial will follow at Roselawn Memorial Park. Thank you great grandpa for showing all of you daughters, granddaughters and great granddaughters what to look for in a great man. Thank you for always being kind and showing me how to beat em all at a hand of cards :-) Our life is better for having had you in it and I hope you are at peace now. I try not to be in pain over your passing but its hard for me to understand why you had to go. I just hope its better where you are and one day I will see you again. Love you always-Stephanie, Rob, Austin and Alyssa
