Barbara M. Malone

MADISON - Barbara M. Malone, age 77, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family on Friday, May 13, 2011, following a courageous battle with cancer. Barb was born on Nov. 3, 1933, the daughter of Joseph and Theresa (Maciejoski) Basel, in Omro, where she grew up and worked hard on the family farm. She worked at Winnebago Mental Hospital and then Mendota Mental Health Center for 37 years. She married Philip Malone in Oct. 1966. They had two children, Michael and Kathleen. For enjoyment, she loved to crochet remembrance stars and doilies for her parish, St. Dennis Catholic Church. In addition, she enjoyed cooking and baking with her grandchildren, playing cards with her friends, knitting hats for babies born at Meriter Hospital, and loved spending time in her beautiful flower garden. The true passion of her life was her family. She cherished her grandchildren, Jerry, Abigail and Caden, who she cared for deeply. Recently, her last "perfect day" was when she saw her granddaughter Abigail, receive her first communion. Barbara will be remembered for her tenacity, wit, strength, sassy spirit and kind heart. Barbara is survived by her daughter, Kathleen (Tim); grandchildren, Abigail, Caden and Jerry; her life partner, Phil; her "second daughter", Cris; sisters, Jeannie (Robert) Bodine, Margaret (John) Flannigan, Carol Garcia and Pat Basel; sister-in-law, Sandy Basel; many other relatives, dear friends and loving neighbors. Barb was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph and Theresa; two brothers, Tommy and Gerry; and her son, Mike. The family wishes to extend their heartfelt thanks to all the loving staff at HospiceCare, you are angels on earth, Dr. McFarland, Dr. Khuntia, Peg and all the staff at the Carbone Cancer Center, the staff on the 8th and 10th floors of Meriter Hospital. In addition, Janet Marsh, Father Bart Timmerman and everyone who assisted on her last wishes for a Happy Mothers Day. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at ST. DENNIS CATHOLIC CHURCH, 505 Dempsey Rd., Madison, at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, May 17, 2011, with Father Kent Schmitt presiding. Visitation will be at the church from 9 a.m. until the time of the service on Tuesday. Burial will be at Resurrection Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to HospiceCare Inc., 5395 E. Cheryl Parkway, Fitchburg, WI 53711. The family requests anyone attending the service to wear colorful apparel, we will be her bouquet of flowers. "Mom, you will always be our rock."
