Donald Eugene Stewart

MADISON-Donald E. Stewart, age 83, of Madison, died unexpectedly at home on Monday, May 23, 2011, from a heart attack. He was born on Aug. 5, 1927, in Madison, the son of Maurice and Adeline Stewart. He married Elaine Ottow on Oct. 28, 1950, at Trinity Lutheran Church. Don served in the U.S. Marines and Merchant Marines. He worked for the Madison Police Department as an officer, and later as a detective retiring in 1983. Don enjoyed gardening and his artistic talents showed in his paintings, drawings, woodwork, and his unique Halloween pumpkins. Don enjoyed traveling and also had a great interest in military history. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church. Dons honesty, generosity, work ethic, and sense of humor were evident in everything he did. His passion for living life to its fullest was exemplary. Dons devotion to the woman he loved and the very special relationship they created was truly inspirational. No wife could ask for a better husband, and no son could ask for a better father. Don is survived by his wife of 60 years, Elaine; sons, Scott (Junko) and Todd; two grandsons, Gabe (Christina) and Blake; two nieces; and a nephew. He was preceded in death by his brother, Maurice Jr. Funeral services will be held at GUNDERSON EAST FUNERAL HOME, 5203 Monona Drive, Madison at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, May 31, 2011, with the Rev. Susan Schneider presiding and military honors to follow. Visitation will be held at the funeral home from 1 p.m. until the time of service on Tuesday. Private burial will be held at Roselawn Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Trinity Lutheran Church. Cemetery: Private burial will be held at Roselawn Memorial Park.
