Ruth Mathis

Mathis, Ruth Ann MADISON- Ruth Ann Mathis, age 84, passed away on Wednesday, May 4, 2011, at Oakwood Village East. She was born Sept. 14, 1926, in Sioux City, Iowa, the daughter of Harry and Anna (Warwick) Gamrath. Ruth Ann married Paul Mathis on March 24, 1946, in San Diego, Calif. She graduated with the Madison East High School Class of 1944. Ruth Ann worked for the State of Wisconsin Public Service Commission for 28 years, retiring in 1988. Since 1930, she was a member of Bashford Methodist Church, where she volunteered with home visitation for shut-ins, helped in the food pantry, and served in the kitchen for funeral luncheons and other events. Ruth Ann was also an active volunteer at Olbrich Gardens. She is survived by two sons, Michael (Patricia) Mathis of Cottage Grove and Gary (Janice) Mathis of Waunakee; daughter-in-law, Leslie Mathis of Louisville, Colo.; two grandchildren, Danielle and Matthew; five step grandchildren, Kelly (Jason) Vance, Melissa "Missy" Meidl (Chad), Jodi (Craig) White, Brad Chamberlain, and Jodi Chamberlain; and five step great-grandchildren, Zach, Caden, Katlyn, Brenden and Kendryn. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Paul in 1989; and a son, Steven in 2010. Memorial services will be held at BASHFORD UNITED METHODIST CHURCH, 329 North St., Madison at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, May 10, 2011. Visitation will be at the church from 9:30 a.m. until the time of service on Tuesday. A luncheon will follow the service at the church. A separate memorial service for Ann will also be held at the Oakwood Village East Chapel at a later date. The family would like to thank the nursing staff at 4SW and 8SW at St. Marys Hospital in Madison, and the nursing and other staff at the Oakwood East Rehabilitation Center, for their care and compassion during Anns final days. Visitation: Visitation will be at the church from 9:30 a.m. until the time of service on Tuesday.
