Wendell Clay Smith

OREGON-Wendell Clay Smith, age 90, passed away on Friday, April 29, 2011 at the Oregon Manor. He was born on November 13, 1920, in Boone County, Indiana, the son of Herschel Clay and Letha Lorena Smith. Wendell was united in marriage to the love of his life, Helen Schlecht on June 24, 1944. He held various agricultural jobs prior to locating Oregon in 1960 where he opened his insurance agency working with America Family Insurance for over 25 years. Wendell was an accomplished woodworker who enjoyed making clocks and furniture. He was a charter member of Westwood Christian Church since 1959. Wendell is survived by his loving wife, Helen of Oregon; two daughters, Judy Smith of Lake in the Hills, IL, Cheryl (Ken) Nyhus of Chippewa Falls; two grandsons, Michael (Karen) Nyhus, Christopher (Camille) Nyhus both of Chippewa Falls; three great-grandchildren, Blakely, Veronica and Zack Nyhus; a brother Waymeth Smith of Wautoma and a niece Linda Payne and her family of Wautoma. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister Waneta Hoskins. Funeral Services will be held at WESTWOOD CHRISTIAN CHURCH, 5210 Odana Road, Madison at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, May 3, 2011 with the Reverend Ken Henes presiding. Private burial will be in Eagleton Cemetery, Eagleton, WI. Visitation will be from 5:00 PM until 8:00 PM on Monday, May 2, 2011 at the GUNDERSON OREGON FUNERAL & CREMATION CARE, 1150 Park Street, Oregon and also on Tuesday from 10:00 AM until the time of the service at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Westwood Christian Church. The family would like to extend a special thanks to Meriter and Stoughton Hospitals, Oregon Manor and HospiceCare, Inc. for their loving care of Wendell and the family.
