Obituary

OBITUARY Mr. Morgan Brown, Jr. Sunrise: January 3, 1943 Sunset: April 29, 2011 Morgan Brown, Jr., age 68, of Madison, WI, passed away following a brief bout with pancreatic cancer. Morgan passed away peacefully with his family by his side on Friday, April 29, 2011. His proud parents, Morgan Brown, Sr. and Willie Mae Kelly Brown, and his son, Joshua Brown, preceded his death. Mr. Brown attended Gospel Temple Missionary Baptist Church in Rosedale, MS. Morgan will be forever remembered for spending significant time in fighting for human rights and racial injustices in the Civil Rights Movement during the 1960s in the state of Mississippi. Morgan was present at the 1963 March on Washington where some 250,000 people convened to protest racial injustices across the country. Mr. Brown labored long and hard against discriminatory practices in the South, and his work has left an indelible mark on improved racial equality to this date. Specifically, Mr. Brown risked his life in pursuit of getting African Americans to register to vote enabling them to participate at a greater level in the political process. Morgan was especially proud of his work that ultimately helped lead to the election of President Barack Obama, our first African American President. He made valuable contributions to advance education for his work in bringing Headstart to the Delta area of Mississippi. Furthermore, he fought to eradicate hunger in the South by bringing supplemental foods to the poor, and he led and participated in many demonstrations against racial injustices against the disenfranchised and the poverty-stricken. While the country still has a long way to go in bringing about racial equality, Mr. Browns work in the early years of the Civil Rights Movement has made the country better today for all races. Family and friends will remember his life contributions to the betterment of the country along with his longevity in the work force. He formerly worked for Curtis Candy Company in Chicago, IL; The Veterans Administration Hospital in Madison, WI; and retired early from General Motors Corporation in Janesville, WI, after 16 years of service. Morgan forwent an opportunity for higher education because he felt he could make a greater impact improving the quality of life for so many in the South through his passion for equal rights for all, especially "little people" and entering the workplace at an early tender age. For leisure, Morgan truly enjoyed traveling, fishing, and hunting. He was initially wed to Bobbie Jean Conner of Chicago, IL.
