Obituary

VERONA/ BRODHEAD- Merton Harry Mattison, DDS, age 91, died March 23, 2011, at Four Winds Manor in Verona. The son of Hans and Jessie Jones Mattison was born on June 12, 1919, in LaCrosse. After growing up in LaCrosse and Madison, he moved to Brodhead to finish school where he was active in football and basketball, graduating in 1938. He attended UW-Madison until he entered the service in 1940. He served in the Army during the Second World War where he rose to the rank of First Sergeant and received a medical discharge. Merton continued his education and graduated from Marquette Dental School with a DDS degree in 1949. On May 7, 1955, he married Donna Decker of Wausau, WI. He opened his dental office in Brodhead in 1949 and retired from practice in 1983. Merton was a life member of the American and Wisconsin Dental Associations and served as the president of the Green County Dental Society. Merton was an active member and served in various posts of the Brodhead Bicknell Masonic Lodge, Monroe Commandry Knights Templar, Zor Shrine and Madison Scottish Rites. He was part of the Brodhead American Legion where he served as commander and was a life member. Merton served in various civic organizations and boards on the local and regional level. He was a member of Brodhead United Methodist Church. He was predeceased by his parents, step-mother Lulu, three bothers (Ralph, Stan, Llewellyn) and one sister (June). He is survived by his wife Donna, son Jay (Mary) of Verona, WI, and his two grandchildren Lars and Kari. His family would like to thank the staff at Four Winds Manor in Verona and the Middleton VA Hospital and Great Lakes VA Health System for the care provided to Merton in his last years. The assistance of HospiceCare in Madison over the last weeks was also a great comfort. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 am on Thursday, April 7, 2011 at St. James Lutheran Church, 427 South Main Steet, Verona. Pastor Kurt Billings will officiate. Interment will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers his family asks that memorials in his honor be given to Four Winds Manor Activities Fund, 309 Schweitzer Drive, Verona, WI 53593 or The South Central Wisconsin Alzheimers Chapter, 10 East Doty Street Suite 844, Madison, WI 53703.
