Obituary

MADISON-Carolyn "Snookie" Stondall of Madison, passed away on March 30, 2011, at age 89 with comforting attention at the HospiceCare Center in Fitchburg. She was born on Sept.8, 1921, in Walworth County, the youngest child of Frank and Laura Granzo. She spent her early childhood on the family farm where she was called Snookie. After the loss of her parents at a young age, she was raised by her older sister and husband, Helen and Carl Sunby in Milton. She spent her days growing up there with her best friend Charlotte (Davidson) Skelly, dressing alike, being bridesmaids, and having many fun times together. The love of her life, Steiner Stondall, offered her assistance after she fell ice skating on the Milton pond and they went on to be prom king & queen, friends to many, and 1939 graduates of Milton Union High School. Carolyn graduated in 1943 from Whitewater State Teachers College and taught for a year in Lake Geneva. On Aug. 12, 1944, she married Steiner in Texas before he shipped out overseas to serve in WWII in the 10th Mtn. Division. After the war they came to live in Madison. Later settling in at home on Acacia Lane for 49 years, Snookie maintained the most wonderful friendships with her immediate neighbors. She enjoyed Homemakers, playing bridge, and was known for her expertise in being a good shopper. Sweet Snookie had two daughters, Sally and Laura, whom she raised in a most endearing way with her quick wit and spunky character, plus she taught them well for life. They will always be grateful for the example of lasting love, kindness to all, having fun with a wide circle of friends on numerous social occasions, and entertaining guests at home or at their log cabin. Her longstanding favorite position was teaching fourth grade at Glendale Elementary School in Madison where she touched many childrens lives. Carolyn was preceded in death by her parents Frank and Laura; sister and brother-in-law, Helen and Carl; brothers, Herb and Johnny; niece, Sue and other in-laws. Carolyn will be sadly missed by her loving husband whom she was married to for 66 years. Steiner will always be admired for his wonderful care during the last seven years when Snookie had Alzheimers disease. She is also survived by her daughters, Sally of Portage and Laura of Appleton; grandchildren, Sarah (Brad) Fillbach of Onalaska, Rebecca (Carl) Schenzel of Janesville, Carl (Katie) Bryan of Couer dAlene, Idaho, Craig Konz of Denver, Colo. and Kurt Konz of Bozeman, Mont.; great-grandchildren, Sidney Fillbach, Lucas Fillbach and Tanner Schenzel. The family wishes to thank all of our friends and relatives for loyal support along with Dr. Asthana, Meriter Hospital Staff, care givers at HospiceCare in Fitchburg and The Senior Helpers. Funeral services will be held at GUNDERSON EAST FUNERAL HOME, 5203 Monona Drive, Madison, at 3 p.m. on Monday, April 4, 2011, with the Rev. Curt Everson from Bethel Lutheran Church presiding. A luncheon will immediately follow. Visitation will be held at the funeral home on Sunday, April 3, 2011, from 3 p.m. until 5 p.m. She will be laid to rest privately with family at Highland Memory Gardens. Dear Stondalls, We love you and Snookie, FOREVER. Thanks for being so good to us through the years and setting a wonderful example of LOVE, COURAGE, and how to live a purposeful life. I was fortunate enough to marry into your family in 1983. When I first met Snookie and Steiner, they played a cute joke on me. They told me Steiner was my fiance's father. I called him Carl Sr. all evening! We all laughed so much, while dining out that evening with my real future in-laws. I will always appreciate Snookie and Steiner watching my 3 month old daughter, Alexa, the night my own mother died. I was so grateful. I loved Snookie and our laughter-filled "girl's" meals out. She truly embraced me for 30 years. Our family's thoughts and prayers are with you. Annie, Doug, Alexa and Lauren

To the family of Mrs. Stondall, I had the pleasure of having Mrs. Stondall as my 3rd grade teacher at Glendale in the 1979/80. She taught be a great deal, and not just academically. She had high standards for her students, but was free flowing with her praise when you achieved what she knew was possible from you. My thoughts are with you in this time of sorrow. I have so many good memories of Mrs. Stondall while I was growing up. I knew her first as a caring mom to my friend Laura and I remember attending birthday parties, playing on the swingset, and ice skating in the backyard. Later, Mrs. Stondall showed up in my classroom at Glendale! She was a good friend to my parents, stopping by on birthdays to bring a gift from the heart. Mrs. Stondall was also there for the more difficult times of sickness and death. I am sad to hear that she has passed from this life, and may your good memories sustain you during this time. My condolences to all, Kathi (Koellen) Goodman

I had Mrs. Stondall as my language arts teacher in 4th grade at Glendale, which was 1969-70. I remember her well, as being an energetic, demanding teacher, who pushed her students to do and be their best. I really enjoyed the spelling bees she conducted, too. My sympathies to her family.
