Obituary

MADISON, WISCONSINMargaret (Rud) Glasrud, ( teacher, wife, and mother), age 91, succumbed to respiratory failure on Wednesday, March 9, 2011. She was born on Nov. 23, 1919, and spent her early years in Dorchester County, Iowa. Her parents, John P. Rud (deceased) and Inga Storlie Rud (deceased) resided on the Waterloo Ridge where they owned a beautiful farm. For school, Margaret (or Peggy as her parents and sister, and occasionally a son or daughter, referred to her) boarded at homes in Spring Grove, Minn. She earned her diploma, with additional interests in music, pom poms, and cheerleading, at Spring Grove High School. She attended Luther College in Decorah, Iowa (staying with an aunt and uncle) and received a certificate in elementary education. She taught school in Ossian, Iowa. Among her teaching challengeswhich she dearly lovedwas training Norwegian American youths to read and write English. She married Leslie E Glasrud of Spring Grove on April 27, 1940, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. After their marriage they moved to Plainview, Minn. where Leslie began his long career with the Skelly Oil Company. During her life the family also resided in Pipestone, Aitkin, and Rochester, Minn., Madison, Wis., and Mesa, Ariz. Two of their six childrenBruce Alden and Robert Williamwere born in Plainview, two - David Eugene and Camilla Jean in Pipestone, and two Judith LeAnn and Karen DiAnn in Aitkin. The children generally provided Margaret with enjoyment, challenges, affection and became special components of her life. For leisure and recreational activity Margaret enjoyed gardening, readingand always the daily newspaperand watching the ever-changing Monona Bay across from her home. She enjoyed sitting on an inner tube in the bay, attending sporting events, and riding in the car. She liked to travel, and took trips to China, Japan, the Philippines, Norway, and sojourns to Mexico and Canada. For many years Margaret and Leslie wintered in Mesa, Arizona and spent the summers in Madison, Wisconsin. After Less death in 2001, Margaret remained at home in Madison. She was an avid people watcher. She enjoyed being around people, but not being the center of attention. She made sure that everyone was taken care of before taking care of herself. Likely what her children, and others, most remember was her ability to snap her fingers to end any potential conflict or ill behavior. She is survived by her sons, Bruce Glasrud and David Glasrud; daughters, Judith Glasrud, Lynn and Karen Glasrud Wolf; son-in-law, Douglas Wolf; daughters-in-law, Pearlene Vestal Glasrud, Patti Wallace Glasrud, and Jane Johnson Glasrud; her sister, Agnes Rud Swenson; eight grand-children; 14 great-grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; and numerous members of a much loved extended family. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Leslie E Glasrud; son, Robert Glasrud; daughter, Camilla Glasrud Crawford; and son-in-law, Norm Lynn. A memorial service will be held at ST. JAMES EVANGELICAL LUTHERAN CHURCH, 427 S. Main Street, Verona, Wisconsin, at 11 a.m. on Monday, March 14, 2011. Entombment will be at Roselawn Memorial Park. To the Glasrud Family, What good friends Margaret and Les were with my parents, Carol and Richard Burr. They shared many, many good times together on extended trips in their motor homes and then in Mesa, Arizona. Both of your parents shared loving stories about each of their children and grandchildren and the educational and other milestones in your lives. And, Allan, Mark and I always enjoyed seeing your dad when he was a great usher at Bethel. When I called to tell my parents I had read that Margaret was gone and what a special obituary it was, my mom said she thought she probably knew everything that would be in it because she and Margaret had shared so much about their families. Over the years, we tried to visit Margaret when my parents came to Madison, but now that they are 93 and Dad has trouble getting around, we go to Cedar Rapids to see them. So, I'm sorry that we hadn't been there recently. And, Allan and I were out of town the day of the memorial service. So, I send our family's sympathy with thanks that Margaret and Les (and all of you, indirectly) were an important part of our lives. Warm Regards, Michele Burr Mickelson

Hello. My name is Polly Tracey. I did not know Margaret but I recently purchased a sewing pattern from 1940 and tucked within the pattern was a letter to Margaret in Ossian, Iowa, from Agnes in Spring Grove that was written right after Margaret’s marriage to Les. I thought someone in your family may like to have it. You can reach me at coffee30@charter.net. I would be happy to mail the letter to you. Polly
