Obituary

MADISON / STOUGHTON- Donald Richard Horn, age 89, passed away on Sunday, March 6, 2011, at Skaalen Home. He was born on June 5, 1921, in New Auburn, the son of Carl and Malinda (Sievert) Horn. He married Leora on June 10, 1947, in Bloomer. He lived a long and full life with many highlights. He had two distinct and successful careers. He joined the U.S. Army at the outset of World War II and spent the war in the Pacific Theater of Operations where he was a meteorologist in the Army Air Corps. He served as part of the Army of Occupation in Tokyo at the wars end. One of his proudest moments was to be among the first members of the U.S. Air Force, when it became a distinct branch of the armed forces. He served on active duty during both World War II and the Korean War and completed his service in the Air Force Reserve, retiring as a Lt. Colonel with more than 20 years of service. Don was a member of the National Retired Officers Association. Dons second career, which overlapped his military service, was that of an educator. After graduating from what is today the UW-River Falls (then River Falls State Teachers College) he began a long and satisfying career as a math and science teacher. On the staff of Madison East High School for more than 20 years, he was the head of the math department when he retired. While math was his first love, coaching, especially baseball, was a close second and something he enjoyed wherever he taught. He was a member of the Madison Area Retired Educators and the Wisconsin Retired Educators Association. His coaching talents were shared with dozens of little leaguers as well, as he regularly coached his sons teams in summer leagues. He passed on his love of baseball to his son and his grandson, Ryan, even though he was the only diehard Chicago Cubs fan in the family. Talk of his grandchildren, and more recently his great-grandchildren, always brought a sparkle to his eye and he beamed as he shared stories of their exploits and achievements while showing off the latest pictures in his collection. Throughout his life he kept connected to his military colleagues, his former students, his church, his neighbors and his friends. He had an impact on literally hundreds of people, many more than he even realized. He is survived by his son, Arlyn D. \"Butch\"(Kathryn) Horn of McFarland; grandson, Ryan (Kristin) Horn of Oak Creek; granddaughter, Megan (Joseph) Bass of Columbus, Ohio; great-grandchildren, Aidan and Sydney of Columbus, Ohio; brother, Lester (Myrt) Horn of Mound, Minn; sister-in-law, Doris White of Barron; and five nieces and nephews. Donald was preceded in death by his wife, Leora; and his parents. Funeral services will be held at LAKEVIEW MORAVIAN CHURCH, 3565 Tulane Avenue, Madison, at 1 p.m. on Thursday, March 10, 2011, with the Rev. Staci Marrese-Wheeler presiding. We have such fond and loving memories of Don and Leora and the entire Horn family. Don was a very gentle, kind and thoughtful person. He certainly loved and had great pride in his family. I can remember the times spent with the Horn family when I was a lonely nursing student at Mendota Hospital. I so enjoyed weekends with the Horns. Our sympathy, prayers and thoughts go out to you and yet this is a celebration of a life well lived and of a soul being welcomed in Heaven, just as Don welcomed people into his life.
