Francis Cutler

Cutler, Francis L. COLUMBUS, Ind./MADISON- Francis L. Cutler, age 97, formerly a long time resident of Madison, was born on Oct. 30, 1913, died Thursday, Feb. 24, 2011, in the home of his daughter, after a long illness. Francis was born in Blue Mounds, the son of Richard Francis and Jessie Iona (McIntosh) Cutler. Francis was the oldest of five children, Norma, Jeanette, Charles, and Floyd, having predeceased him. There are six grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren. Francis attended Town of Wayne school near the family farm. In his late teens, he went to work on the railroad. In his early 20s, Francis obtained a civil service position at Mendota State Hospital, where he met Ruth Fae Schlaak, who was also an aide at the hospital. They were married on June 22, 1937. Ruth passed in 1994. Their daughters are Juanita Ann Cutler-Spencer of England, Marion Cashdollar of Minnesota, and Elizabeth Dolgner of Indiana. Francis later worked at the Madison-Kipp Lubrication Company, and at Gisholt Machine Company, where he remained until about 1949. He became a self-employed carpenter and built many homes and apartment buildings on the East Side of Madison. He was a member of the East Side Business Men's Association. Francis and Ruth were members of the Madison Bible Fellowship Church. They helped establish and run the Victory Service Center on East Washington Ave. during World War II. They also were members of the Gideon Bible Ministry, Waubesa Bible Camp, Madison East Bible Church, and attended Grace Baptist Church. Funeral services will be held at GUNDERSON EAST FUNERAL HOME, 5203 Monona Drive, Madison, at 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 5, 2011, with Pastor Dean Howell of Grace Baptist Church officiating. Visitation will be at the funeral home from 10 a.m. until the time of the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Grace Baptist Church or Jennings County Hospice, Indiana.
