William Knudson

Knudson, WilliamMIDDLETON - William Knudson, age 99, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 19, 2011, at Attic Angel Place Health Center. He was born in Racine, Nov. 27, 1911, to Hans and Anna (Tobiasson) Knudson, who emigrated from Norway in 1904. William graduated from East High School Feb. 1, 1929, where he had been elected to head the East High chapter of the National Honor Society and was co-manager of the Tower Times. He earned an A.B. in 1933 and J.D. In 1938 from UW-Madison and was admitted to the bar in 1938. William then spent a year as a law fellow with the Wisconsin Attorney General's department before entering individual law practice in Madison. He served in the U.S. Army Intelligence Service (ASU) in Europe from 1942 until 1946. Upon his honorable discharge he resumed private law practice before joining State Farm Mutual Insurance Company as an attorney. William served as assistant librarian in the Wisconsin State Library from 1957 until 1968, when he became head librarian, retiring in 1975. He was an active member in many legal associations, as well as an author of Wisconsin Legal Research Guide. William is survived by nieces and nephews, Robert (Lola) Knudson, Donald (Barbara) Boe, Doris Ann Knudson, Rebecca (Joseph) Carney, David Knudson and William Knudson; and many great-nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; and siblings, Johnnie, Karl, Arthur, Ida Santos and Olga Christensen. Graveside services will be held at ROSELAWN MEMORIAL PARK, 401 Femrite Dr., Monona, at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 22, 2011. In lieu of flowers, memorials to Attic Angels Place would be appreciated.
