Obituary
MADISON- Bernard G. Steinhoff, age 86, passed away on Sunday, Dec. 19, 2010, from complications related to advanced dementia. He was born on Nov. 3, 1924, in Wilton. He served proudly in the U.S. Navy during World War II as a Fireman First Class aboard the USS Chauncey in the South Pacific. After the war he married his beloved wife of 53 years, Marion (Boyle) and they took over operation of the family dairy farm outside of Wilton. Together they ran a successful farm operation and raised a family. In 1966, the family moved to the Green Bay area where Bernard started a new career with the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture. Bernard worked as a Food Safety Inspector and Technical Specialist until his retirement in 1990. Retirement allowed Bernie to pursue his many passions, including golfing, bowling, fishing, hunting, woodworking and gardening. He was also an accomplished home brewer and in his later years, he became a great cook as well. Bernard was a wonderful man who loved his family, friends and neighbors. He was a very caring person who saw all the good in life. He loved the beauty of nature and the simple gifts of life including a good joke, an excellent book, a round of golf or the shade of a tree and a cold beer on a hot summers day. He was a father who taught his sons the values of learning, integrity, honesty and caring for others, especially those who were less fortunate. He was a counselor providing priceless insight and wisdom. Most importantly he was a friend that could always be counted on. Bernard is survived by his four loving sons, Steven (Judy) of Brookfield, Timothy of Germantown, New York, David of Madison and John (Martha Grasty) also of Madison; two granddaughters, Jessica and Jennifer Steinhoff; sisters, Patricia OShea of Milwaukee and Elizabeth (Betty) Flock of Wilton; sister in-law, Marie Weber of Cuba City; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins and friends. Bernie was a friend and fellow worker at DATCP. I was fortunate to take his position when he left DATCP for retirement and worked at a number of dairy plants with him. Sorry for the loss! He will be missed.

I was sad to here of Bernie's passing. Having worked closely with him while he was with DATCP in the Green Bay area I always found him to be an excellent resource of knowledge, good character, with a high degree of work ethics and work integrety.
We wish him the best as he journeys to new and great spiritual dispensation.
May the Almighty, God, our Creator be with him and his family.

As a fellow DATCP employee I can truly say that Bernie was a real asset to the Food Safety Division and the State of Wisconsin citizens. I am sure he will be missed. Our thoughts are with your family.

We were friends of Bernie and Marian while they lived in Ashwaubenon and we did visit them a couple times in their home located close to Madison. We met them in the 1970's through the Democratic Party which we were active members. Both Bernie and Marian had wonderful humor and helped to lighten up a day with a smile. We visited in their back yard where they had a beautiful garden, apple trees and just the right place to enjoy the beauty of nature.
They enjoyed roses and they had the finest of roses one could wish for. We missed them a lot after they moved away and we did keep in contact for a while. Bernie wrote to us a couple times after Marian passed away.
They had three wonderful sons whom they were proud of and enjoyed being with. The world is a better place of Bernie and Marian. They helped others and were kind and caring friends,
Blessed be the memories.
God Bless you all.
