He served in the U.S. Army as a combat engineer for two years in Germany during the late 1950s. He graduated from UW-Stout at age 60 with a BS in Secondary Education, and retired at age 65 as chief quality inspector at American Champion Aircraft. Throughout his full life Dave enjoyed his lakeside cottage, being outdoors hunting, fishing, and turning his boys into men. He was an enthusiastic geocacher, devoted to the study of genealogy and proud of his achievements as a private pilot. He cherished the time he spent with the Knights of Columbus, his friends at the Model A Ford Club, and volunteering at his church. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Connie (Stoehr) of Madison; and his five sons, Matt (Christine) of Moraga, Calif., Eric (Jeanette) of Sevierville, Tenn., Paul (Sue) of Wautoma, Robert (Jenny) of OFallon, Ill. and Mark (Cathy) of Monroe. He was preceded in death by his parents, Rolland (Zina); and a brother, Fredrick, all of Shawano. He adored the company of his 15 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Many years ago I was a camp counselor at Castle Rock. Actually the same year that Matt was also a counselor up there. Since that summer , the experiences and leadership that Mr. Kuckuk and other leaders provided have been utilized in my life since then. I extend to you our thoughts and prayers.
