Lois M. Pulliam,
October 26, 1914 - November 29, 2010
Obituary
MADISON-Lois Pulliam, age 96, died Monday, Nov. 29, 2010, in Madison. She was born on Oct. 26, 1914, in Stanley, the daughter of Lars Oscar Solie, born in Norway, and Mathilda (Westberg) Solie, of Swedish descent. The family belonged to Our Saviors Lutheran Church, and Lois was salutatorian of the 1932 class of Stanley High School. As young women, she and her sister Nordis decided to change the spelling of Solie to Soley because they liked the way it looked. In later years, they would laugh about that. Lois met Captain Robert W. Pulliam of the US Army Corps of Engineers while both were working on the Manhattan Project in Oak Ridge, TN. They married on Oct. 5, 1945, in Knoxville. In 1946, they moved to East Troy, roughly halfway between Stanley and Bills parents in Cleveland, OH. Lois loved East Troy and had many many friends there. Her daughters proudly remember that she always worked outside the home and wore pants (she called them slacks) to work. Lois is survived by daughters, Mary of Madison and Becca of New York City; sister-in-law, Freda Solie of Snohomish, WA; niece, Gretchen (Solie); Gretchens husband, Maurice Johnson of Little Falls, NJ; and niece, Martha Rampe Whitbeck of Gates Mills, OH. Younger family members live in Merida, Mexico; Berkeley, CA; Santa Fe, NM; and Asheville, NC. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; her sister, Ruth; brother-in-law, Chester Solie; sister, Nordis Soley; brother, Dr. John D. Solie, his daughter Pam (Solie) Goins; and nephew Rick Whitbeck. We would like to thank Jeff Shields, his wonderful staff and the residents at Chamomile Assisted Living, 22 Milo Lane, for their loving care and friendship during these last four years. We also thank the women of St. James Methodist Church in East Troy for staying in touch with Lois. She always enjoyed receiving their cards and letters. There are no services are planned at this time.

I've never forgotten the warmth and welcoming sweetness of both your parents when you invited me to a holiday meal in East Troy when we were college roommates. How exotic the Midwest seemed to a New Yorker from Long Island and how exciting to learn your mother had hitchhiked around the country in her 20s! Your wonderful parents are evident in your own intelligence, wit and loving nature. Your family and all who knew your mom are in my prayers.
