MADISON-Robert D. Mello passed away on Monday August 9, 2010 from Leukemia surrounded by loving family.Bob was a first generation American, born February 21, 1932 in Elizabeth, New Jersey the son of Armando Mello, who was born in Portugal and Marie Alexy, who was born in Austria. Robert was united in marriage to Ann Dagit on December 30, 1953 in St. Patricks Church in Elizabeth, New Jersey. \r\nBob was a United States Air Force veteran having proudly served his country from 1951-1954. He spent twenty-five years as an officer for the Elizabeth, NJ Police Department, retiring in 1983 as a Major Crimes Investigator to pursue his love of carpentry. After spending all of his life in New Jersey, Bob and Ann moved to western Maryland where he fulfilled a lifelong dream of building his own home. They again moved to Florida for 8 years prior to moving to Madison in 2006 to be closer to their youngest grandchildren. Bob created and fixed many toys for his 13 grandchildren: Jill, Chris, Katelyn, Gerard, Robert, Cale, Cady, Hannah, Lauren, Avery, Steffen, Katherine and Evan. Bob is survived by Ann, his ever loving and dedicated wife of 56 years; children: son Rob (Inola) Lubbock, TX, son Rick Millburn, NJ, daughter Robyn (Bob Van Buren) North Beach, NJ, son Gerry (June) Middleton, WI and a nephew Bill Dagit (Linda) who came to live with them after losing his parents in 1972, Charlotte, NC. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother William A. Mello. The family would like to extend a special thanks to Dr. Walter Longo, Dawn Rettiger and the entire staff at UW Carbone Cancer Center. Also to RN Marloe Manneter, RN Jessica Branson and the entire nursing staff of UW Hospital for their professional and sensitive care.In lieu of flowers the family would prefer memorials in Bobs name to the UW Carbone Cancer Center 600 Highland Ave Madison, WI 53792.A Memorial Mass will be held at ST. THOMAS AQUINAS CATHOLIC CHURCH, 602 Everglade Drive, Madison at 11:00 AM on Friday, September 3, 2010 with Monsignor Donn Heiar presiding. Visitation will be on Friday from 9:30 Am until the time of the service at the church.\r\n
