Obituary
STOUGHTON - Evelyn B. "Evie" Overton, 88, passed away peacefully at Skaalen Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Stoughton, on Wednesday, Aug. 25, 2010. She was born Dec. 13, 1921, in McFarland, the daughter of Oscar and Clara Alsmo Vick. Evie was married to James William "Bill" Kinney for 17 years until his death in 1955. She married James \"Jim\" Overton in 1958, and they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary together. Jim passed away in 2009. Evie and Jim moved to Portage on the Wisconsin River when he retired and lived there for 25 years before relocating to Oregon. She was active and held office for many years in Masonic organizations, becoming State Mother Advisor for Rainbow Girls and a life member of the Order of Eastern Star. Evie was active in the Presbyterian church, serving as a Deacon on the Presbytery Board and she volunteered as part of the outreach ministry at the federal prison in Oxford. Evie loved to travel with her friends, and flew to Alaska to visit her great-grandchildren and take a cruise from Whittier to Vancouver at age 87. Her lifelong passion was fishing. She was once dubbed "the Queen of the River" in an article written by a reporter who spent time with her on the Wisconsin River. Evie is survived by her daughter, Pam (Gary) Kinney Mather of Oregon; two granddaughters, Andrea (Mark) Peirce of DeForest, and Danielle (Jeff) Mason of Delta Junction, Alaska; four great-grandchildren, Alexis and Dru Peirce, Wyatt and Sam Mason; sister-in-law, Bernice Vick of Stoughton; special nieces, Patricia Olsen of Prairie du Sac, and Nancy (Joe) Hogan of Waunakee; and many other nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her sister, ProxAda; brothers, Hiram, George, John and Peter Vick; and two sisters-in-law, Theo and Jesse. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Skaalen Chapel, 400 N. Morris St., Stoughton. Burial will be at McFarland Lutheran Cemetery. A visitation will be held from 10 a.m. until the time of the service Monday. The family wishes to thank all the staff at Skaalen who took such wonderful, loving care of Evie during her time there, and the Janesville HospiceCare staff who also provided kind and understanding support the past eight weeks.
