Obituary

MADISON-Imogene E. Mergen, fondly known as Gene and Nanny, age 84, died Sunday, February 28, 2010. She was born August 11, 1925, in Potosi Township, the daughter of Joseph and Emma (Klein) Udelhofen. On June 5, 1948, she married Nicholas T. Mergen, and they settled in Bloomington. In October 1963 Nick passed away and Gene moved to Madison with her four children. Shortly thereafter she began a career in government service, retiring from the VA in 1990 after 25 years of service. Gene continued her active life by spending many years as an associate in the Boston Store jewelry department. She was involved with the EX-POW Association, travel and caring for friends and relatives. Gene is survived by four children, Connie (James) Conway, Wolverhampton, England, Greg (Denise) Mergen, McFarland, Pamela (Kevin) Horan, Sacramento, CA, and Vickie (Gary) Kittleson, McFarland. Gene was blessed with five grandchildren, Heidi (Mark) Toth, Nicholas (Amanda) Mergen, Jonah Mergen, Megan Conway, Timothy Mergen and two great-grandchildren, Haley and Addison Toth. In addition to her husband Nick, Gene was preceded in death by an infant daughter Patricia; her parents; four sisters and two brothers. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at ST. THOMAS AQUINAS CATHOLIC CHURCH, 602 Everglade Drive, Madison at 11:00 AM on Friday, March 5, 2010 with Monsignor Donn Heiar presiding. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Bloomington at 3:00 PM on Friday. Visitation will be held on Friday from 9:30 AM until the time of the service at the church.
