Obituary
MIDDLETON-Family, friends and co-workers of Dennis Loper are mourning his passing, remembering an intelligent, humble man with a warm smile. His love for his family, talent for golf, and passion for running will never be forgotten. American Family's vice president of property & casualty loss reserving died Tuesday night, Jan. 5, 2010 at age 52. Dennis collapsed at the end of a 5 mile race on New Year's Day in Middleton, and was hospitalized in critical condition at the University of Wisconsin Hospital. He was born on June 4, 1957 in Milwaukee, the son of Donald and Kathleen (Rice) Loper. Dennis graduated from Nathan Hale High School in West Allis and earned bachelor's degrees in actuarial science and risk and insurance from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He began his career at CUNA Mutual in Madison and also was employed at Allstate Insurance in Northbrook, Illinois. Dennis joined the American Family company's Controller Division in 1989 as a staff actuary. Six years later, he was promoted to chief actuary. In 2002, he was named director of loss reserving and product analysis, assuming responsibility for financial analysis of the product lines. In 2006, he was elected vice president of property & casualty loss reserving. He was a fellow in the Casualty Actuarial Society and a member of the American Academy of Actuaries. Dennis was united in marriage to Rita Stengl on September 26, 1981 in Antigo. He is survived by his wife, Rita; four children, Becky (Tim) Cleaver of Niceville, Florida, Alita, Patrick and Michael; his parents, Donald and Kathleen Loper of West Allis; his siblings, Don, Jean, Susan (Rick) Leachy, Cindy Berg, all from the Milwaukee Area; father-in-law, Charles Stengl, Antigo; sisters-in-law, Sue (Will) Halser, Palmyra, Cathy Skarlupka, Antigo, Anne (David) Lumby, Kenosha; brother-in-law, Ken (Peggy) Stengl, Weston, nieces, nephews and many friends. He was preceded in death by his mother-in-law, Marilyn Stengl. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at ST. BERNARD'S CATHOLIC CHURCH, 7450 University Ave., Middleton at 10:30 AM on Thursday, January 14, 2010 with Monsignor Douglas Dushack presiding. Visitation will be from 5:00 PM until 8:00 PM on Wednesday, January 13, 2010 at the GUNDERSON WEST FUNERAL HOME, 7435 University Ave., Middleton and also on Thursday from 9:30 AM until the time of the service at the church. In lieu of flowers, those wishing to express their sympathy may consider a donation for a memorial to be established in Dennis' name at a later date. The family requests your prayers for the many organ and tissue recipients and their families.

Visitation will be held from 5:00 PM until 8:00 PM at the GUNDERSON WEST FUNERAL HOME,7435 University Ave., Middleton on Wednesday January 13, 2010.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be at ST. BERNARD'S CATHOLIC CHURCH ,7450 University Ave, Middleton at 10:30 AM on Thursday, January 14, 2010
