Social Security Benefits After a Loss
Navigating the process
When a loved one passes away, certain family members may be eligible for Social Security survivor benefits.
Gunderson can assist with the initial notification process and help guide you on what steps to take next.
Who May Be Eligible
Eligibility depends on the individual’s work history and family situation. In general, monthly survivor benefits may be available to:
A surviving spouse age 60 or older (age 50 if disabled)
A surviving spouse caring for a child under 16 or with a disability
A divorced spouse (if the marriage lasted at least 10 years)
Unmarried children under age 18, or up to 19 if still in school full-time
Adult children with disabilities that began before age 22
Dependent parents age 62 or older
Benefits are based on the deceased’s Social Security work credits, which vary depending on age at the time of death.
One-Time Death Benefit
A one-time payment of $255 may be available to an eligible surviving spouse or child, depending on household and benefit status at the time of death.
