Allen H. "Al" Miller

BROOKLYN - Allen H. “Al” Miller, age 83, of Brooklyn, Wis., passed away on Thursday, Nov. 11, 2021, at Agrace HospiceCare. He was born on March 6, 1938, in Milwaukee, Wis., the son of Raymond and Alice (Wendel) Miller. He married Judith L. Diedrich on June 22, 1963, in Milwaukee. Al was a 1956 graduate from Pulaski High School in Milwaukee and earned a Bachelor of Science degree from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1960. Al served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1960 until 1968, during which he served 15 months in the Vietnam War. After his military service, Al received his Master of Science in Landscape Architecture from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1972. He was the Director of Coastal Management for the State of Wisconsin for ten years and then became the Assistant Director for Outreach for the Sea Grant Institute at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. In his spare time, Al loved gardening, working on classic cars, woodworking, and all outdoor activities including camping, fishing, boating, and bird watching. Later in life, he dedicated his skills and energy to the restoration of natural prairies in the community and his home. “He made the impossible possible” (Oregon Observer April 26, 2018) when he brought to life the Lerner Conservation Park in Oregon, Wis. Al strongly believed in giving back to the community, which he did through his participation in Oregon’s Rotary Club, Habitat for Humanity, and Oregon’s Rolling Meadows Retirement Community from its inception. He was also an active member of the Wisconsin Land Information Association, the University of Wisconsin-Madison and the U.S. Naval Academy Alumni Associations. Al is survived by his wife, Judy; daughter, Cary (Thomas Dolan) Miller-Dolan; twin grandsons, Dain and Aidan Dolan; son, Michael Miller; and grandsons, Morgan and Jack Miller. Al was preceded in death by his parents, Raymond and Alice; brothers, Donald and Robert Miller; and daughter, Jennifer Miller. Al’s family is eternally grateful to Lindsey Schulz and the entire staff at Agrace HospiceCare for their kindness and skilled care of both Al and Judy during a difficult time. A memorial service will be held at ST. JOHN'S LUTHERAN CHURCH, 625 E. Netherwood St., Oregon, at 1 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 3, 2021, with a visitation to follow. A burial with full military honors will be held at PRAIRIE MOUND CEMETERY, 950 N. Main St., Oregon, at 3 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 3, 2021.
