Military Foundations

Our legacy of honoring those who served is woven into the fabric of our company, starting just after World War 1. Founder Elmer Gunderson was a medic in the Marine Corps. Medics not only helped with caregiving soldiers, but they were also responsible for the graves registration, making sure deceased soldiers made it back to their hometowns. As he returned to the east side of Madison after the war, Elmer took up the trade of Funeral Director, Embalmer, and Undertaker, before passing away at the young age of 45 in 1940.

His wife Inez took up the mantle and successfully ran the company for years to come.

The legacy of service continues as many of our former and current staff members have served. We deeply appreciate the sacrifices they have made for our country.

Special Logistics

One key way Gunderson Funeral Home supports veterans is by helping families navigate the benefits and entitlements offered by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). These include burial allowances, headstones or markers, and burial in a national or state veterans' cemetery. Our experienced funeral directors are knowledgeable about the paperwork and processes involved, making it easier for families to access these benefits during times of grief.

Traditional Honors

At a minimum, eligible veterans are entitled to the folding and presenting of the American flag to the next of kin and the playing of Taps by a bugler or recording. These honors are performed by an honor guard detail that consists of at least two members of the Armed Forces. One member must be a representative from the branch in which the veteran served, and this member will be the individual who presents the flag. Military funeral honors are free of charge and mandated by law for eligible veterans. Eligibility will be verified by the veteran’s DD-214 or discharge papers.
