Obituary for Janice K. Kash

DUBUQUE/MINOCQUA/HOMOSASSA, Fla./MONROE/MADISON-Janice Kay Kash (AKA Momma Bear, Mom, and Grandma Kash), age 77, of Madison, passed away on Tuesday, Oct. 16, 2018, at Oak Park Place. She was born on June 8, 1941, in Dubuque, Iowa, the daughter of Joseph and Florence (Hetzler) Bauer. Janice grew up in Dubuque, Iowa. She attended Immaculate Conception Academy and received her associate degree from Rock Island College Nursing School, bachelor's degree in nursing from University of Dubuque, and master's degree in nursing from Drake University. Janice had a thirst for knowledge and still was thinking about getting her PhD. Janice was united in marriage to Al, in Dubuque in 1978. They were so excited to celebrate their 40th Anniversary this summer with family and friends. Their marriage has been a powerful example of dedication and true love. Jan worked as a registered nurse for almost 50 years, in many positions including the emergency room, nursing home, staff development, administration and teaching. She had a strong belief in God and her life revolved around her Catholic faith and church community. Jan was active in the church choir as organist, pianist and singer for over 50 years. Music was one of her biggest passions. Jan played the piano (since age nine) and organ; she loved dancing, especially with Al to country music; she enjoyed listening to all kinds of music including classical and Broadway tunes and she loved to sing. Jan had many other talents. She was a great seamstress and baker. Jan’s fudge, pie, and fried chicken with mashed potatoes will long be remembered by many. She loved every holiday gathering and spent her last few days “planning” her next Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter dinners with her family. Jan had many friends who she enjoyed spending time with talking, shopping, playing in card club, crafting and attending Purple Dress Red Hat Club events. She always wanted to be busy, even after retirement and spent countless hours volunteering for church and community projects such as “Bookworms” and Good Will. Jan had an adventurous spirit and liked taking vacations. Some of her favorite trips included Waupeton on the Mississippi River, Florida, New York City, Hawaii, Arizona, New Jersey, northern Wisconsin and Europe. Jan had a dynamic personality. She was a woman in control, strong willed and independent; she was hard working, determined and driven. She could be dramatic, opinionated and serious but she loved a good laugh or joke. In her final months, Jan continued to heal and teach others in a sweet, gracious, and loving manner. Jan is survived by her loving papa bear, Al; her six children, Shawn (Debbie) Laibly, Madonna Kash, Thor Laibly, Joanne (Scott) Schellhase, Brandi (Scott) Handel, and Chad (Nicci) Laibly; nine grandsons, Luke Laibly, Paul Handel, Jack Schellhase, Ryan Handel, Spencer Schellhase, Joey Laibly, Tristan Laibly, Adrian Laibly; four granddaughters, Cassie Laibly, Danielle Laibly, Tess Laibly and Amanda Handel; her brother, Dave and Sue, as well as many other relatives and close friends. She was preceded in death by her parents. Jan’s role as wife, mother grandmother and daughter was paramount. Being with her family was what she enjoyed most of all. She was so proud of her children and grandchildren and loved to talk about them. Her husband Al brought her unending happiness and his loving, compassionate care and commitment has been an inspiration for all.
