<description><![CDATA[<img src="http://gundersonfh.com/components/comObituaries/obituarythumbnails/90_114570.jpg" alt="Violet L. Morehouse" />MADISON-Violet L. Morehouse, age 90, passed away peacefully on Saturday, Feb. 4, 2012.  She was born on Oct. 28, 1921, the daughter of Peter and Lydia (Tollund) Burkeland.  Violet was united in marriage to Norbert “Shorty” Morehouse and they had many wonderful years together.  She enjoyed working in her flower gardens, especially with her roses.  Violet spent annual vacations in Tomahawk with her family.  She loved to dance and play cards and simply being around people.  Violet was a member of St. Bernard Catholic Church for many years.  
She retired from UW-Madison Lathrop Hall after 20 years.  Violet is survived by her children, Barbara “Bobbie” Jones, Norene Bailey, Diana “Mitzi” Morehouse and JoAnn Jensen;
six grandchildren, David (Vicki) Kinney, Deanna (Donald) Kinney-Smith, Douglas Kinney, Scott (Shelly) Jensen, Brinda (John) Mecham and William “B.J.” (Jennifer) Bailey;
12 great-grandchildren;
one great-great-grandchild;
and sisters-in-law, Virginia “Ginny” Morehouse, Cordelia “Corky” Burkeland, and Sister Anne Morehouse.  She is further survived by many nieces and nephews.  Violet was preceded in death by her parents;
husband, Norbert “Shorty”;
four brothers;
and one sister.  Funeral services will be held at GUNDERSON EAST FUNERAL HOME, 5203 Monona Dr., Madison, at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Feb. 9, 2012, with Sister Anne Morehouse presiding. Burial will be at Roselawn Memorial Park.  Visitation will be at the funeral home from 10 a.m. until the time of the service.  The family wishes to extend a special thank you to Violet’s two best friends, Nancy Gordon and Darlene “Dar” Dankert and the staff at Karmenta for the compassionate care and love they gave Violet.

<description><![CDATA[<img src="http://gundersonfh.com/components/comObituaries/obituarythumbnails/90_114577.jpg" alt="William H. Engel" />MONONA-William “Bill” H. Engel, age 87, passed away on Saturday, Feb. 4, 2012, at Nazareth House in Stoughton.  He was born on March 21, 1924, in Madison, the son of Jesse and Kathryn (Harlin) Engel.  He graduated from Madison East High School in 1941, and furthered his education at UW-Madison, majoring in engineering.  He was drafted into the U.S. Army in February of 1943, at the age of 18.  Bill served his country for two tours of duty in France, Germany, Belgium, and Luxembourg in World War II.  He served with General George Patton’s first army and was in the first replacement detachment in the Battle of the Bulge.  He was on the front lines for 154 days without relief, as an artillery sergeant.  Bill was united in marriage to Genevieve “Gen” Catherine Hoffman of Westport, on Nov. 12, 1955.  In 1957, Bill co-founded the UW Madison Orthotic Lab.  As Director and Certified Orthotist, he designed, built, and fitted orthosis for the severely disabled for 33 years, with many of his inventions written up in the Medical Archives.  Bill shared his time and talents in Monona his entire adult life and was considered an icon of the community.  He was a charter member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, Monona Volunteer Fire Department serving as a training officer, and American Legion Post 429 serving as an officer for 50 years.  Bill served on the Monona Village Council for four years, then for 24 years on the police and fire commission, 12 years as president.  After retirement, his many activities included volunteering for Kiwanis, Meals on Wheels, highway clean up, Wilmar Soup Kitchen, St. Stephen’s Food Pantry, Salvation Army, and presenting student scholarships among others.  Bill’s interests included restoring classic cars and boats, and he played league softball until he was 75.  He learned to play the piano, organ, violin and harmonica through classes at MATC and had a beautiful voice which he shared in the IHM choir.  Bill’s most recent big experience was the Badger Honor Flight to Washington D.C. on Nov. 12, 2011.  He regarded this as one of the greatest honors of his life.  Bill was truly a faithful servant of God, his family, and community.  He was an inspiration and mentor to many and was loved and admired by all who had the opportunity to know him.  Bill is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Gen;
his daughter, Kristi (Tim) Panthofer; his cherished granddaughters, Annalise, Olivia, Katie (Jon) Boone and Betsy; great-granddaughter, Isabelle; sisters, Connie Homan, Betty Jo (Ken) Kruska, and Mary (Dick) Neuman; sisters-in-law, Cherie (John) Nuepert and Jerry Hoffman; brothers-in-law, Jerry Kessenich, Howard Hoffman, and Ed Wronkowitz; and many nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Jim (Mary) Engel; sisters-in-law, Jane Wronkowitz and Mary Kessenich; and brothers-in-law, Marv Homan and Joe Hoffman.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at IMMACULATE HEART OF MARY CATHOLIC CHURCH, 5101 Schofield St., Monona, at 11:30 a.m. on Thursday, Feb. 9, 2012, with Father Bart Timmerman and Monsignor Gerard Healy concelebrating.  Military Honors will follow immediately after Mass.  Burial will be at Highland Memory Gardens, following a luncheon at the church.  Visitation will be held at GUNDERSON EAST FUNERAL HOME, 5203 Monona Dr., Madison, from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m., Pass and Review at 6:30 p.m. with Rosary to follow, on Wednesday, Feb. 8, 2012, and also at the church from 10:30 a.m. until the time of the Mass on Thursday. Theodore Long (aka Alva), age 75, passed away on Saturday, February 4, 2012, among his family during his brief stay at Agrace HospiceCare.  He was born on Aug. 21, 1936, at Denver, MO, the son of Alva Curtiss &amp; Lillie Iris (Elliott) Long.  Ted was wed to Agnes Bernards on Dec. 3, 1960, at Dubuque, Iowa.  After 23 years serving in the US Air Force, he settled in Wisconsin with his family and then worked at the US Post Office for 18 years.  Ted enjoyed gardening, driving, and short visits to see family.  Later in life he liked to repair/maintain his many clocks and watch birds from out his back door.  He was preceded in death by his wife Agnes, his parents, his brothers Bill, Jerry, Wilburdean, &amp; Charles.  He is survived by his 2 sisters, Pat &amp; Judy, brother ,Bob, 6 children Elliott of Waunakee, Andy of Honolulu, Susan (James) Strang of Mazomanie, Paul (Jop) of Moultrie, GA, Joe (Sandra) of Waunakee, and Linda (Todd) Hutchinson of Mazomanie, 8 grandchildren, 2 great-grandchildren, many nieces, nephews, and other relatives.  The family will greet guests at 4:30 PM on Wednesday, February 8, 2012   until the time of services beginning at 5:30 PM at GUNDERSON WEST FUNERAL &amp; CREMATION CARE, 7435 University Ave., Middleton.  Military honors will be held immediately following the service.   Food &amp; beverages for fellowship will follow.  He will be greatly missed.

Margaret was born on January 22, 1932, in Roxbury, to Gerhard “Hardy” and Caroline (Blum) Pings.  She attended both grade and high school in Sauk City and went on to further her education at Madison Area Technical College majoring in Bookkeeping and Accounting.  She was married to Melvin A. Miller in 1949 and raised three sons, John, David and Ronald.  Margaret was employed with Massachusetts Life Insurance, Connecticut General, Northwest Construction and retired from Yahara Materials Inc.  She was a member of St. Bernard’s Parish in Middleton.  Margaret enjoyed traveling abroad to other countries with the Friendship Force and spending time with family and friends.  She liked to keep busy in her retirement with part-time jobs, a couple of them being doing demos for Copps Foods and working at the Senior Coalition.  Margaret is survived by her three children, John H. (Doris) Miller, Belvidere, IL,  David A. (Pam) Miller, Windsor, Ronald T. Miller, Madison; grandchildren, great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandchild; her sister-in-law, Avis Pings and many nieces and nephews.  She was preceded in death by her parents, Gerhard and Caroline Pings and three brothers, Gerald, James and Patrick Pings.  A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at ST. BERNARD’S CATHOLIC CHURCH, 7450 University Ave., Middleton, at 11:00 AM on Monday, February 6, 2012, with Monsignor Douglas Dushack presiding. She was born on June 24, 1946, in Highland, the daughter of Gerald and Ann Marie (Imhoff) Kroll.  Janet graduated from Highland High School.  She was united in marriage to Richard “Dick” Damon on May 11, 1968.  Janet was a daycare provider until she could no longer work.  She loved doing arts and crafts with her grandchildren and enjoyed drawing, snowmobiling, fishing, camping and spending time with family and friends.  She is survived by her husband of 43 years, Dick;
children, Dan (Sheri), Michelle (Cory) Mitchell, and Derek (Shannon Moon);
grandchildren, Kylie Damon, Reagan Mitchell, and Timm and Travis Brown;
siblings, Kathleen, Jerry (Jane), Rick, Mary Lou (Chuck) and Jim;
and many nieces and nephews.  Janet was preceded in death by her parents;

<description><![CDATA[<img src="http://gundersonfh.com/components/comObituaries/obituarythumbnails/90_114667.jpg" alt="James Howman" />MADISON/MIDDLETON-James (Jim) Howman, passed away unexpectedly at his home, Friday February 3rd.  He was a true gentleman, kind, considerate and devoted until the end. Born in Neenah October 1st, 1929.  He liked telling stories about growing up on the shores of Lake Winnebago with his older brothers Stan and Richard (Bub). He graduated from Neenah High School and attended Oshkosh State University before transferring to the University of Wisconsin-Madison from which he received a bachelor of science degree in 1951. He started Law School before joining the Army to go to Korea. When he returned from Korea, he enrolled in graduate school and received a Master&#039;s Degree in Social Work in 1959.
 Jim’s caring nature served him well during his career as a Social Worker in LaCrosse, Fond du Lac, Dane, Waushara, and Winnebago counties.  For the majority of his career he worked for the Wisconsin Department of Health and Social Services until retirement.
Jim loved to laugh and enjoyed a good joke.  He had a lifelong passion for cars.  He often joked that it was either a Porsche or Doris, his future wife. He married Doris Bednarek on December 26th , 1959 and was the proud owner of a Morgan sports car. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 2009, one of the Golden Wedding couples honored by the Madison Catholic Diocese that year. 
Besides the family and friends, Jim enjoyed following the Packers and Badgers and building model planes, boats and cars and his N-gauge model railroad.  Jim had a kind heart toward children and animals.  
Besides his wife, he is survived by his daughters, Beth Howman-Combs (Dr. Michael), of Ripon, Jill, (Cary) Bremigan, Madison; grandchildren, Steven and Emily Combs, Ripon; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Katie Howman, Neenah; Gene and Fran Bednarek, Barbara Kurczek, and Julie and Richard Sobralski, all of Berlin; Georgia Bednarek, Denver, CO; Jane Werner, Greenfield; David and Jane Bednarek, Wauwatosa; and Francis Bednarek, Green Bay.  He is survived by his feline companion Jerry.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Louis Howman and Henrietta Malchow Howman, his brothers, Stanley and Richard (Bub) Howman; his mother-in-law and father-in-law, Isadore (Ike) and Bridget (Brygie) Bednarek; sister-in-law, Joan; and brothers-in-law, Frank Kurczek, Merlin Werner, and Thomas Bednarek.
The family wants to express its deepest gratitude to caregivers Phil and Katie for the devotion and love they showed to both James and Doris.
 A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at ST. BERNARD’S CATHOLIC CHURCH, 7450  University Ave, Middleton at  11:00 AM on Thursday, February 9, 2012 with Monsignor Joseph P. Higgins presiding.  Burial will be at Resurrection Cemetery, Madison.  Visitation will be on Thursday from 9:30 AM until the time of the service at the church.

Wichern, age 73, of Madison, passed away on Wednesday, Feb. 1, 2012, at the UW Hospital. He was born on Mar. 16, 1938, the fifth son of Harold John and Lelah Elizabeth (Hogan) Wichern. Dean was united in marriage to the love of his life, Joan Staskal, in 1962. He was a lifelong resident of Madison. Dean graduated from Madison East High School in 1956, and then proudly worked as a construction surveyor for the City of Madison Engineering Division for 36 years. He was also in the Army Reserve for eight years, serving in the 826 Ordinance Co.  Dean worked a total of 40 years in public service. He served as treasurer of Lakeview Christian Church from 1982 until the time of his death. In the summertime, Dean enjoyed playing hardball and softball. He was a proud Packers, Badgers and Brewers fan. Dean will be greatly missed by his beloved family, which includes his wife of 49 years, Joan; children, Jodene Ruiz de Chavez of Madison, Jim (Kris Denis) Wichern of Madison and John (Mary) Wichern of Fitchburg; nine grandchildren, James, Joy (Steve Blakenheim), Jenny and Julia Pfeiffer, Emma Ruiz de Chavez, Josh, Margaret, Jackson Dean and Luke Wichern; brothers, Frank (Leah) and Bill Wichern; sister-in-law, Edythe Wichern; and numerous nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Don, Bob, Hal and Lee Wichern; and son-in-law, Tony Ruiz de Chavez. Underhill, age 90, of Madison, passed away on Wednesday, Feb. 1, 2012, at Waunakee Manor.  She was born on Oct. 15, 1921, in Cayuga, N.D., the identical twin daughter of Joseph and Jenness Haring.  She was the loving wife of Francis Underhill, who preceded her in death in June of 2005.  She was a very hard worker, retiring after 40 years at F.W. Mean’s.  She enjoyed her frequent trips to Ho-Chunk Casino and spending time with her family, especially her children and grandchildren.  Jean was a very sweet lady and we will miss her very much.  She is survived by her children, Jack (Jan) Ochalla of McFarland, Ken (Mary Jo) Ochalla of Omro, and Raene (Jeff) Williams of DeForest; eight grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.  She was preceded in death by her parents; ex husband, Johnny Ochalla; husband, Francis Underhill; her identical twin sister; two brothers; and four other sisters.  Funeral services will be held at GUNDERSON EAST FUNERAL HOME, 5203 Monona Drive, Madison, at 11 a.m. on Monday, Feb. 6, 2012.  Burial will be at Roselawn Memorial Park.  Visitation will be held at the funeral home from 10 a.m. until the time of service on Monday. Stanley, age 81, passed away at home on Tuesday, Jan. 31, 2012.  He was born on Oct. 6, 1930, in Madison, the son of Frances Saevke and Brett Stanley.  Jim graduated from Madison West High School in 1948.  He served in the United States Air Force and was a sergeant in the Wisconsin Air National Guard.  On June 20, 1953, he married Jean L. Larson.  Together they raised five wonderful children and were married for over 50 years.  He worked at Duquesne &amp; Blumer and Kayser Ford which fed into his love for cars, old and new.  In 1969, he obtained Roselawn Memorial Park in Monona and owned it until 1997.  He was a member of the Madison Club, Nakoma Country Club and was past president of the Wisconsin Cemetery Association.
Jim is survived by his children, Jeffrey (Lynn) of Madison, Timothy (Linda) of Monona, Sandra (Dale) of Necedah and Kari Lewis of California; 11 grandchildren, Samantha, Lucas (Heidi), Kristina, Adam, Aaron, Alex, Austin, Renee, Nicholas, Chase and Kelly; seven great-grandchildren, Candice, Karly, Kateri, Kyra, Hayley, Hayden and Holden.  He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Jean; and son, Brett.  
Jim touched the lives of everyone he met with his quick wit, sense of humor and genuine passion for life.  Throughout his life he met and maintained friendships with many wonderful people.  Memorial services will be held at GUNDERSON EAST FUNERAL HOME, 5203 Monona Drive, Madison, at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 4, 2012, with Pastor Brad Homan presiding.  A private burial service will be held at a later date at Forest Hill Cemetery.   Visitation will be held at the funeral home from 10 a.m. until the time of service on Saturday.  The family wishes to thank Heritage Monona Assisted Living for their ongoing care and support and to Barbara for her friendship during his time spent at Heritage. Schmelzer, age 98, lifelong resident of Madison, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, Jan. 31, 2012.  She was born on Sept. 19, 1913, in Madison, the daughter of Herman and Julia (Hegg) Spanum.   She graduated from Madison East High School in 1932.  Helen married Victor Schmelzer on Dec. 3, 1942.  She was a member of St. Bernard Catholic Church.  Helen cherished being able to live in her childhood home for more than 90 years.  She loved being surrounded by her family.  Helen will always be remembered as a kind and gentle woman.  She enjoyed gardening and spending time with her neighborhood friends.  Helen is survived by her children, Janet Schmelzer, Bill Sr. (Mary) Schmelzer, Rick (Cindy) Schmelzer, and Marcy Schmelzer; grandchildren, Billy, Lisa (Ken), A.J., Dan (Sara), Tami, and Kayla; great-grandchildren, Dayne, Molly, and Finley; her faithful “buddy”, Jane, who was always there for her; and her longtime canine companion, Shadow.  She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Victor in 2005; siblings, Emma Mandt, Clary Spanum, and Herbert Spanum; brother-in-law, Phil Schmelzer; and sister-in-law, Rosella Kuehn.   A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at ST. BERNARD CATHOLIC CHURCH, 2450 Atwood Ave., Madison, at 3 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 3, 2012, with Monsignor Michael Hippee presiding.  Burial will be at Resurrection Cemetery.  Visitation will be at the church from 1:30 p.m. until the time of Mass on Friday. Charlene worked  27 years for the State of Wisconsin with DATCP, retiring in March of 2011.  Charlene is survived by her husband of 49 years; children, Tammy (Joseph) Crittenden, Terry (Laurie) Dunn, and Dorothy Dunn; 12 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; brother, Tom Thaden; many nieces and nephews; and other family.  She was preceded in death by her parents; and sister, Bonnie.  Funeral services will be held at GUNDERSON EAST FUNERAL HOME, 5203 Monona Drive, Madison, at 2 p.m. , on Saturday, Feb. 4, 2012. <description><![CDATA[<img src="http://gundersonfh.com/components/comObituaries/obituarythumbnails/90_114542.jpg" alt="Bruce R. Holland" />FITCHBURG-Bruce R. Holland, age 69, passed away  at St. Mary’s Hospital in Madison, from complications due to Alzheimer’s on Tuesday, Jan. 31, 2012.  He was born on Dec. 17, 1942, in Waukesha, the son of Chester and Ruelle (Wolfe) Holland.  Bruce grew up on a farm in the Oconomowoc area.  He graduated from Oconomowoc High School in 1962.  Bruce married Carolyn Carr on Sept. 1, 1962.  He began his working career for Blaney Seed Corn as a seed dealer and within a short time, Bruce began working in research development.  After many wonderful years working with Blaney’s, he continued his research for O’Brien Hybrids.  Bruce loved being in the outdoors, whether working on his own farmette or time spent at his cabin in Muscoda.   He enjoyed watching and learning about wild birds and was particularly interested in Blue Bird populations, building and placing blue bird houses in various locations.   He was an advocate for recycling and re-using materials way before communities made it mandatory.  Bruce is survived by his wife, Carolyn Holland; daughters, Heather Pauley and her daughter, Shelby, and Tracy Holland and her children, Jasmine and ShyHeem; sons, Hans (Dianna) Holland and  children, NazaRae and Jeremiah, and Hayes (Frances Ihle) Holland; mother, Ruelle Holland; brother, Brian (Margaret) Holland; sister, Shari Holland; sister-in-law, MaryLou (Bill) O’Brien; and many nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by his father, Chester Holland; brother, Larry Holland; and father and mother-in-law, Ralph and Alice Carr.  Funeral services will be held at GUNDERSON EAST FUNERAL HOME, 5203 Monona Drive, Madison, at 1 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 6, 2012, with the Rev. David Brynelson presiding.  Burial will be at Ottawa Cemetery in Ottawa, Wisconsin at 3 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 6, 2012.  Visitation will be held at the funeral home from 11 a.m. until the time of service on Monday. She was born on Aug. 29, 1989, in Madison, the daughter of Tommie Brown and Carmella (Jenkins) Harris.  Tessia graduated from UW-Madison in December, 2011, with a degree in fashion design.  She was a multi-talented young woman. Tessia was the winner of the UW-Madison Campus Idol competition as a freshman, was on the Dean’s List and a recipient of many other awards. As Tessia was determined to beat cancer, her parents checked her out of the hospital so she would be able to walk across the stage and receive her diploma.  Tessia had designed her own line of clothing and was co-founder of Live 2 Heal Foundation.  She is survived by her parents, Tommie Brown of Madison and Carmella (Daryl) Harris of Waukesha;
brother, M. Eugene Jenkins Brown of Madison;
sister, Sherry Brown of St. Louis, Mo;
maternal grandmother, Donnetta Jenkins of Gary, Ind;

Sandy attended Mankato High School in Minnesota.  She married Jerome Schafer on Aug. 25, 1963.  Sandy enjoyed traveling with her husband as his work took them to many foreign countries.  She took great pride in caring for her family and was an excellent baker.  Sandy’s greatest joy was being surrounded by her family and spending time with her granddaughter.   She is survived by her husband, Jerry of Stoughton; son, David (Amy) Schafer of the Virgin Islands; daughter, Susan (David) Perrine of New York, New York; granddaughter, Lucia; brother, Perry Foster Jr.; and sisters, Fern Renken and Janice (Dean) Cowdin.   She was preceded in death by her parents; infant sister, Delaine; and brother-in-law, Lowell Renken. Young, age 82, passed away peacefully on Monday, January 30, 2012 at Pines Assisted Living in Prairie du Sac.  She was born on August 10, 1929, in Devils Lake, N.D., the daughter of Peter and Jennie Haugen.  Carol worked for Research Products in Madison for 17 years and also for GTE for many years. She also worked at the Downtown Café in Lodi where she was famous for her lemon meringue pies.  Her children were her most treasured possessions and she had great pride in them all.  Carol is survived by her nine children, Helen Ballweg, Phyllis (Joe) Ballweg, Russell Hansen, David (Beth) Hansen, Carrie Hansen-Williams (Tim), Janet (Frank) Kasowicz, Peggy (Pete) Meegan, Melanie Hansen, and Steve Hansen (Debbie); many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, brothers, sisters and many other relatives and friends.  She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Jerry Young and a daughter, Jennifer Marinko.  A celebration of Carol’s life will be held at HAMRE GUNDERSON FUNERAL &amp; CREMATION CARE, 157 S. Swenson, age 59, passed away peacefully on Monday, January 30, 2012 at her home surrounded by her loving family.  She was born on August 16, 1952, in Madison, the daughter of Peter Hellenbrand and Rosemary and Gene Garfoot.  A graduate of Middleton High School, Marie earned her Associate of Liberal Arts degree from MATC in 1999. Marie was a member of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church.  She was employed with the state of Wisconsin for over 17 years as a food service manager.  In 1986, she won Outstanding Young Woman of America and was also an active member of the Dodgeville Jaycettes.   She had a variety of interests including sewing, crafting and gardening, but what she truly treasured most was the time spent with her family. Marie celebrated 26 years of sobriety and was always willing to give a helping hand to anyone in need.  Marie was mother, father and friend to her children, and leaves  her family with her legacy of faith, family and forgiveness.   She was a selfless servant of God.  Marie is survived by her five children, Tina (Pat) Brown and their children, Amber (Ian Nelson), Jeremy and Spencer; Melissa (Eric) Spangler and son, Tyler Arthur; Angela (Steve) Schmit and their son Cayden; Michael Swenson and  David (Angie) Swenson; three great grandchildren, Bryant Kliefgen, Logan and Brooklyn Nelson, many nieces, nephews and her Godchildren, Stefny Kolesikov, Mindy Grant and Cody Peterson.  She is further survived by her brothers and sisters, Daniel “Helm” (Debbie) Hellenbrand, William “Willy” (Marilyn) Hellenbrand, Jane “Jaynee”(Bruce) Bowden, Vincent “Smiley” Hellenbrand, Paul “Paulie” (Patti) Hellenbrand and Lois “Lowey” (Vernon “Butch”) Boehnen.  She was preceded in death by her parents, Peter Hellenbrand, Rosemary (Gene) Garfoot; her Godfather, Joseph Dahmen and special friend, Rick Whalen.  A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at ST. FRANCIS XAVIER CATHOLIC CHURCH, 2947 Thinnes St., Cross Plains at 11:00 AM on Friday, Feb. 3, 2012, with Father Stephen Umhoefer presiding.  Burial will follow in the church cemetery.  Visitation will be on Thursday, Feb. 2, 2012 from 4:00 PM until 7:00 PM at the church and also on Friday from 10:00 AM until the time of the service. Niva, age 79, passed away on Sunday, Jan. 29, 2012.  She was born on Feb. 28, 1932, in Mt. Horeb.  Joan, along with her sister, Doris, and brothers, Bob and Ole, grew up in the Madison area.  Joan was a graduate of Madison Central High School.  Following graduation, she met Don Niva, and they were married on July 18, 1951.  They just celebrated their 60th Wedding Anniversary. Joan worked for UW-Madison for many years.  She enjoyed square dancing for more than 50 years.  Joan loved the outdoors, camping with her family, Copper Falls State Park, and walking along the shores of Lake Monona.  She is survived by her husband, Don; children, Greg (Lynne), Steve, Kathy, and James (Ginger); grandchildren, Matthew, Alex, Michael, and Nicholas. He was born on Dec. 30, 1922, in Deansville, the son of Fred J. and Clara Edna (nee Ehlenfeldt) Kleinschmidt.  He celebrated 58 years of marriage with Patricia Ann (nee Langer) Kleinschmidt.  They were married on Sept. 12, 1953. Audrey spent his professional career as a CPA.  He graduated from Madison Business College in 1940.  He joined Smith and Gesteland in 1943, as their first employee.  He worked at Smith and Gesteland until his retirement in 1991.  Audrey became a partner in 1953, and served as managing partner of Smith and Gesteland from 1966 through 1980.   In addition to his work related duties, he was a member of various professional, civic and religious organizations, including WICPA ( where he served as president from 1984 until 1985), AICPA (where he served as a board member), Madison Downtown Rotary Club, Olbrich Botanical Society (where he served on the board), Marshall Area Historical Society, Knights of Columbus (4th Degree), Serra Club of Madison (where he served as a president from 1975 until 1976),  Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish (where he served on the parish council), and the Madison Club (where he served as president from 1982 until 1983).  He also donated his accounting skills to help both the Diocese of Madison and Olbrich Botanical Gardens to improve their overall record keeping.  Audrey loved gardening, golf, traveling, and particularly genealogy following his retirement from Smith and Gesteland in 1991.  He is survived by his wife, Patricia; four children, James (Linda), Ann (Lee Coates), Mark, and Lucy (Eric) Korbitz; two grandchildren, William and Kathryn; sister-in-law, Charlotte Kleinschmidt; four nieces, Theresa (Greg) Jansen, Mary (Dick) Hilden, Evie Meuret, and Kate (Randy) Thome; a nephew, Fred (Colleen) Kleinshcmidt; many grand nephews and grand nieces; and neighbors and friends.  He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Kenneth; and brother-in-law, Roger Langer.  A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at IMMACULATE HEART OF MARY CHURCH, 5101 Schofield Street, Monona, at 11 a.m., with a rosary service at 10:40 a.m., on Saturday, Feb. 4, 2012, with Father Bart Timmerman presiding.  Burial will be at St. Mary of the Nativity in Marshall, at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 5, 2012.  Visitation will be held at GUNDERSON EAST FUNERAL HOME, 5203 Monona Drive, Madison from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 3, 2012.  In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Immaculate Heart of Mary Education Foundation, Agrace HospiceCare, Olbrich Botanical Gardens, and the Marshall Area Historical Society.
